500 Gallon Underground Propane Tank, New & Certified

This 500-gallon underground propane tank is built to ASME Section VIII, Division 1 code, Class 150 certified, with a hemispherical head. It measures 9 feet 10 inches long with a 37.5-inch outside diameter and a 5-foot 9-3/8-inch riser height, and weighs approximately 953 lbs empty. It ships with a Valspar Q-thane ready-to-bury coating, developed specifically to give an underground tank long-term corrosion resistance in constant contact with soil. Filled to the standard 80 percent safety level, the tank holds approximately 400 gallons of usable propane, enough for whole-home heating, hot water, a backup generator, or pool heating, as well as commercial uses such as cooking, dry cleaning, and crop drying. The tank ships under factory vacuum seal; the first fill requires a propane provider to break that suction seal at the POL valve using methanol, after which it fills normally through the ACME fill valve. Burying the tank keeps it out of sight, protects it from surface weather extremes since it draws on the more stable temperature of the surrounding earth, and — because propane is non-toxic and won't contaminate soil or groundwater — poses no environmental risk if a leak were to occur underground. Anode protection is used at installation to guard against natural electrical currents in the soil (electrolysis). Once installed, this Class 150 ASME tank is a fixed, non-portable installation, not a swappable cylinder.
